Channels Estate in Little Waltham, on the northern edge of Chelmsford, is a family-run country estate that opened in 1974 and is still run by the same family four generations on. Weddings centre on the Essex Barn, a 17th-century thatched barn with its own garden, and couples can stay on site at Channels Lodge.

The thatched Essex Barn is the heart of the day: its beams and old timber look warm and timeless in both photos and film. In good weather, the outdoor ceremony under the garden pavilion, with guests on wooden pews, gives a bright, open aisle. For portraits, the avenue of mature trees, the lily pond and the fountain give us varied backdrops within a short walk, so you're never away from your guests for long.

If you're getting ready at Channels Lodge, everything is on one site, which leaves more of your coverage for the day itself. The barn's interior is darker than the garden, so we bring discreet lighting for the evening without changing the feel of the room. In autumn and winter the light goes early, so plan couple portraits soon after the ceremony and use the tree avenue and pond while it's still bright.
