Walcot Hall is a Georgian country house at Lydbury North in south Shropshire, set in around 30 acres of grounds that include a lake, a walled courtyard, a fountain and an arboretum described as one of the finest in Britain. It's a relaxed, characterful venue where your guests can stay on site, so the whole weekend can happen in one place.
About Walcot Hall as a wedding venue
The house is licensed for civil ceremonies, and couples can marry indoors in the Main Hall or outside in the private gardens. If you'd prefer a religious ceremony, the village church in Lydbury North is about half a mile away. Receptions take place in the freestanding turquoise Ballroom, with the Anteroom, courtyard and gardens used for drinks between the ceremony and the meal. Public listings give capacities of around 100 for the ceremony, 114 for a seated meal and 200 for an evening reception, and holiday cottages, cabins and glamping on the estate sleep around 100 guests.
Photo and film ideas at Walcot Hall
An arboretum is a gift for portraits: tall, mature trees give soft shade on a bright day and a different colour palette in every season, from fresh spring greens to deep autumn tones. We'd plan a short walk through the trees and down towards the lake for couple portraits, with the camera following rather than posing you for long. The fountain and walled courtyard work well for family groups and drinks-reception candids, and lawn games such as table tennis during the drinks give us natural, laughing moments for both photos and film.
A coloured ballroom changes how evening photos look, so we'd take a look at the room's light before the day and bring discreet lighting for speeches and the first dance. Because guests can stay on the estate, it's also worth thinking about a relaxed morning-after shoot or a few extra frames of the getting-ready rooms in the cottages.
Timeline tips for a Walcot Hall wedding
If you choose the village church, allow time for guests to travel the half mile back to the hall and for us to get ahead of you for your arrival. For an outdoor ceremony in the gardens, keep an indoor plan in mind and talk to the venue about wet-weather timings, as the garden paths are grass. In autumn and winter the light goes early, so plan couple portraits in the arboretum soon after the ceremony, then move inside for the meal.
